I took my pencil and added it. Now it looked right: Rene Colato Lainez.'' When he writes Colato, he sees his paternal grandparents, René and Amelia. When he writes Lainez, he sees his maternal grandparents, Angela and Julio. Without his second last name, René thinks about a hamburger without the meat or a pizza without cheese or a hot dog without a wiener.

His new classmates giggle when René tells them his name. "That's a long dinosaur name," one says. "Your name is longer than an anaconda," another laughs. But René doesn't want to lose the part of him that comes from his mother's family. So when the students are given a project to create a family tree, René is determined to explain the importance of using both of his last names. This video demonstrates how students can create various designs of bread using materials easily found at home.  For example, students can make a conchas, flautas, cerditos, cuernos, polvorones, or any other design their imagination takes them to.  These models of bread can be found in the book and students can also create their own.  Throughout the video, Ms. Lanni explains how to measure the ingredients to get the right texture of dough. She also wonders what kind of kneading hand movements she needs to do to get certain shapes with the dough as well as putting effort on replicating the designs in the book. With this activity, teachers can tackle various areas such as measurement, texture, shapes, cause and effect, creativity, problem-solving skills, art, and culture, integration with family members, and reading comprehension, among other areas.

Primero, rellena los calcetines con el relleno de la almohada hasta que estén todos rellenos. Luego, ata una cuerda o cinta en la parte inferior para cerrarlo. Ate otra cuerda muy apretada a aproximadamente 1/3 del camino hacia abajo desde la punta del calcetín para hacer la "cabeza". Recorta una boca y orejas en las formas que quieras. Finalmente, pega las piezas de fieltro y los ojos y listo.

Make your own goodnight buddy!

YOU WILL NEED:

• a sock

• stuffing

• craft glue

• googly eyes

• ribbon or string

• felt in various colors to make the mouth, ears, and other decorations

First, stuff the socks with the pillow stuffing until they are all stuffed up. Then, tie a string or ribbon at the bottom to close it off. Tie another string very tight about 1/3 of the way down from the toe of the sock to make the “head.”  Cut out a mouth and ears in the shapes you want. Finally, glue on the felt pieces and eyes and you’re done!
