ABOUT LEARNING ARTS AT HOME

Learning Arts at Home (LAH) is one of the projects for the “Inclusive Arts Integration” program, funded by the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. LAH was created during the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic (March, 2020) to provide a means of read-aloud and book-inspired art-making videos to serve children and families in the Paterson Public Schools (PPS) in New Jersey.

Learning Arts at Home’s design draws upon the theoretical lens of Gay (2002)’s culturally responsive teaching. He defined culturally responsive teaching as "using the cultural characteristics, experiences, and perspectives of ethnically diverse students as conduits for teaching them more effectively” (p. 106). This notion is based on the assumption that when academic knowledge and skills are situated within the lived experiences and students' frames of reference, they are more personally meaningful, have higher interest appeal, and are learned more easily and thoroughly.

OUR GOALS

(1) provide students with culturally responsive read-aloud and art creation videos
(2) support teachers in using the videos with their students as teaching tools
(3) use arts integration as a means to teach content areas, especially literacy and social studies
(4) provide bilingual classes and families with virtual access to art and culture-related videos
